Distinguished and Famous people from Tumut
🎖️ Jack Ryan VC
Edward John Francis Ryan, usually known as Jack, was born at Tumut in 1890 and worked as a labourer before enlisting during the First World War. He joined the Kangaroo recruitment march from Wagga Wagga and served with the 55th Battalion. Near Bellicourt in France on 30 September 1918, he helped recover a threatened trench position and led a small group against German troops attacking from the rear. Continuing after his party had been reduced by casualties, he forced the attackers back before being wounded. His actions brought the Victoria Cross, now held by the Australian War Memorial.
⚽ Sally Shipard
Sally Shipard was born in Tumut and moved with her family to Wagga Wagga at three. Her junior football was played there, including years competing alongside boys before advancing into representative teams. She went on to play for the Matildas, appearing at the Olympics and Women's World Cups and sharing in Australia's 2010 Asian championship success. Her sporting ability also extended to state-level cricket during school years. Tumut's connection is her birthplace, while the junior clubs and schooling that developed her football belong to Wagga, a distinction that gives both places their proper part in the story.
🗳️ Kim Carr
Kim Carr was born in Tumut in 1955 before building his working and political career in Victoria. University study led into teaching and policy work, followed by appointment to the Senate in 1993. He represented Victoria until 2022 and held ministerial responsibilities covering industry, innovation, science, manufacturing and higher education. His later writing included accounts of politics and public policy. The Tumut connection is the beginning of his life, preceding the teaching career and long period in federal Parliament associated with another state.
